A JAR OF OIL
Scripture Text 2 kings 4:2……. She said “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”
One day the widow of a member of the group of prophets came to Elisha and cried out, “My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”
A sudden death and debt in the family made her life miserable. Little by little she had handed over all the valuables in her home to the cruel creditor until nothing remained but her two boys and this little jar of oil. Now the creditor demands to take the boys as slaves, to pay for the debt.
Her sons are her only means of support and lifeline. She is over her head in debt and she doesn’t see how she can make it.
In spite of all her problems she does not turn to her family or her friends. She does not try to find someone to loan her money. In her desperation she turns to the man of God for help. She was determined to fight this difficult time of her life and the first step was to CRY OUT to God.
"What do you have in the house?" Elisha asked the distraught mother.
"I have nothing in the house but a jar of oil," she replied.
Elisha told the widow and her boys to go and borrow as many empty vessels from their neighbors. They were told to shut the door and pour the oil from her little jar into the empty vessels. They did as Elisha instructed, and a wonderful miracle occurred.
The oil in the little jar continued to flow out until all the vessels in the house were filled!
"What shall we do now?" the young mother asked the prophet."Sell the oil, pay your debt, and then you and your sons can live on the surplus," he said. This woman and her boys left Elisha's presence rejoicing and free because of the miracle of the oil.
Will the godly have troubles in life? Yes
Does being Christians mean good and easy lives? No.
The godly can still face hardships and troubles in life. Even a prophet’s family can have financial difficulties. We will all have our days of trouble and trial.
There will come a day when you will reach the end of your rope. At times like this let us not forget God cares and He can be trusted. The widow did not have bitterness nor did she complain or blame God or accuse anyone, not even the creditor in her crisis.
All our needs are never unknown to our Lord. He knows even the tiniest details of our lives.
God will not put anything into full vessels. So, empty yourselves before the Lord and He will multiply the little you offer to Him. He will multiply your talents, gifts and finances.
Therefore, no matter what you are called on to face in this life, learn to turn to the Lord first for the help you need.
This story is a beautiful picture of how much God cares for His children.
No problem is too great or too small for our loving God! He cares! He is able! He will work in your need!
Today this miracle will happen in your life and He will fill your cup to overflowing with His special oil!
