How long, O Lord?
Scripture Text: How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart daily?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Psalms 13:1-2
In the above two verses David says, “how long” four times.
David’s life got complicated by the ruthless King Saul. From the time David was anointed king by Samuel he was on the run and struggled for fifteen long years before he actually became king.
He was physically exhausted and emotionally drained and depressed. In the depths of his depression David cries out to the Lord.
David says in verse 2, I am having sorrow in my heart daily. He says, God I face the same problem every day.
When we face the same problem daily we lack the patience and strength to face it.
When we face horrible and depressing situations we too question God, “How long?”
Where is God when it hurts? He is with us. He has promised to never leave us.
When we face a crisis, sickness or trouble we begin to pray about it and wait for the situation to change.
However, when days turn into weeks and weeks into months and months into years, you begin to wonder your problem doesn’t matter to God. He is hiding His face from you. He has given up on you.
David felt the same way.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Psalms 22 :1
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Psalms 10:1
God has promised us, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! Isaiah 49:15.
You are always in His heart and mind.
When God delays we feel forsaken. Don’t be preoccupied by the circumstances that is never changing. God never delays. He will execute His perfect plan for your life in His perfect timing. He has not forgotten you and He never will.
Make a prayer like David.
In verse 3 he says three things
- Consider me
- Hear me
- Enlighten my eyes
Make a sincere heartfelt prayer to God. He will enlighten your eyes. The present danger may seem too big but He has blessings in store for you in the future.
Despite the circumstances now, His plan for your life has never changed. He knows exactly how you feel today. When anxiety builds up, remember His past goodness and how He delivered you. He loves you so much.
God bless you.
