My Cup Overflows

Scripture Text 23 :5 “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows”.

The cup that is talked about here is not a physical cup but our lives that are filled to overflowing. It talks about our Christian life.

John 10 :10 Jesus said “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”.

Our God doesn’t offer us an empty cup, a half-filled cup or a cup filled to the brim. Our God the good shepherd offers us an overflowing cup.

Our God is a God of abundance.

God gave the Israel people the promised land Canaan and we see in Deuteronomy chapter 8 it was a very good land. It was a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey…. a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

Why some cups never run over?

They fill their cup with the world

Ecclesiastes 2 :10,11 Solomon relates how he tried pleasure, wealth and delights in an effort to find fulfillment and good life. Yet these worldly things did not give him any true satisfaction and happiness. His life was still empty and he tells everything was meaningless.

We can find true happiness, lasting peace if we look upon God our Good shepherd.

If our cups are filled with too much of worldly stuffs then there will be no room for God to put anything into our lives.

They fill their cups with envy

Proverbs 14 :30 “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones”.

King Saul  was from a humble home and God lifted him so high to become the first king of Israel. But he was so disobedient and arrogant he will not listen to God or obey him. God chose King David and replaced him.He pursued David every where to kill him out of envy.  But  David forgave him even when he had opportunity to revenge. Saul finally committed suicide and died. No envious person ever wins.

God hates envy and if our lives are filled with envy God cannot fill our cups to overflowing. We compare our lives, our homes, our kids our jobs, our income with other people.Thank the Lord for every small thing that we have. Bible tells in 1 Corinthians 13 :4  "love does not envy".

They fill their cups with negativity

Moses sent 12 men to spy out the land of Canaan.  So, they went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness.

Ten men gave negative reports about the land Numbers 13 :32. But two men Joshua and Caleb brought back a good report Numbers 14 :9

In Philippians 3:13 Paul tells “Brethren………one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead”.

Forget your past failures. You can’t change your past. God is not pleased with our negative attitudes and it affects our cup being filled.

Today, you may be feeling weary, weak and drained with many worldly worries and pressures. Bring yourself to Him and say “Lord fill my cup”. If you do with a hungry heart, He will fill your life to overflowing and beyond. God fill your emptiness with His strength and power and you will rise up once again and so that you can in turn bless others.
