YOU ARE MY REFUGE, MY ONLY REFUGE
Scripture text Psalms 142 :5 I cried out to You, O LORD; I said, "You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.
Psalms 142 has a title which reveal something about the Psalm. This title enables us to imagine the circumstances which prompted the author to write the particular Psalm.
David the author of this psalm wrote this psalm while hiding in a cave. Saul the existing king was jealous of David who was anointed king by Prophet, Samuel. Saul wanted to kill David and fearing for his life David flees from Saul.
David hid himself in a cave to escape from Saul. David was alone and there was no one to help him. From the cave David pours out his complaint to the Lord. He tells the Lord that he is troubled.
David says, my spirit grows faint within me v. 3. He says, no one is concerned for me and no one cares for me v. 4. He says, I am in desperate need and my enemies are too strong for me V. 6. Also, he says he feels like being in a prison v.7. David prays to God to show him mercy.
When you feel abandoned by everyone admit your insufficiency and cry out to God. When you feel lonely remember that David one of the greatest king of Israel was once lonely in a cave and God rescued him from the hands of his enemies.
You may find yourselves in a difficult situation, lonely and trapped, deserted and defeated. When David faced a similar situation he cried out to God. In the midst of your suffering tell your complaints and trouble to Him. Pour out your heart and soul to God and plead for His mercy for He cares for you. Run to God in time of your need. Often Satan tempts us to run away from God during times of distress ,pain and anguish.
In verse 7 David declares, and then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me. David was confident that God will bring him out of this desperate situation and make him the king of Israel one day as promised.
Do you find yourselves in a cave? If you are currently facing a situation in which you don't know what to say, what to do and where to go - Know that God knows your path and everything is under His control.
Cling to God and His promises for your life. He will bring you out of the desolate pit and set your feet on a rock. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them from all their troubles.
There is always hope for us because we are loved by God and His promises for our lives will never fail.
Have a wonderful and blessed day!
